Alright, we are ready to get started!  Without a Web site address, you can’t have a Web site, right?  Now is the time to start thinking about what you want your Web site address to be.  Many people just cruise right through this step without thinking about it but I’m not going to let you get off the hook that easy ;-)

One of the main things that you should think about are the keywords that you will be targeting with your new Web site.  In this example, the South Florida Junior Golf Web site is going to focus on junior golf in South Florida so right away, I know that I want the words “South Florida Junior Golf” in the url (web site address).

You may ask, should I use .com, .net, .org, .info…the list goes on and on.  I always tell people to try and secure a .com domain extension.  It seems like this is the most popular and professional choice and the search engines like it as well.  The rumor in the SEO (search engine optimization) circles is that Google doesn’t like the .info extension because these were used as spam web sites a lot in the past.

If you are a non-profit organization, many times it is good to use the extension .org as this is usually the norm for these types of sites.  If you are going to be mainly doing video podcasts, then it might be a good idea to use the domain .tv.  Just stay away from the .info domain and you will be just fine.

Alright, I have decided that the domain I am going to use will be  Be sure to stay away from hyphens (-) when choosing your domain name.

I suggest that you use Godaddy to register your domain name.  Do not use Hostgator as they are a few more bucks expensive than Godaddy.

Action Step 1 – Go to and register your Web site domain name.  I have been with Go Daddy for quite a few years now and their domains are the least expensive that I could find.  It is amazing what some registrars charge for a simple domain name.

When you do this, you are going to be offered all kinds of up-sells such as hosting, private domain registration, the list will go on and on.  You don’t need any of that.  All you need to do is register your chosen domain name without any add-ons.  If Go Daddy asks for your nameservers, just leave this alone as we will get to this in a later step.
